Our Story

Church of the Living God started from small beginnings. Robert Dowdy, Sr. and his late wife, Doris pastored our first Sunday service on January 26, 1976 in the home of George and Margie Martin. Each service grew as they met in a local Galveston building. The congregation grew so big, tent meetings were held as revival swept across the Island. Soon a parcel of land was purchased on Seven Mile Road and construction began on our current church building.

God moved on the heart of the congregation to create a school which operated from 1982-1996. The school was influential in giving children a place to grow in their faith.

The Church expanded the sanctuary to provides seats for the growing numbers. Pastor Robert Dowdy's leadership was instrumental during this time of growth.

Hurricane Ike decimated the Island, but God was faithful and with a small remnant the church began to rebuild under Pastor Dowdy's guidance. He was a true shepard caring for God's flock during this season.

Trey & Marlo Dowdy moved from Germany to Galveston. Pastor Trey has been serving faithfully ever since.

What to Expect

    Worship Style
Our church consists of people from various backgrounds and denominations who love Jesus. Our services typically start with modern music followed by a bible based message with practical application.

    How should I dress?
Casual dress is the norm. We live on the Island so don't make any special arrangements. Simply relax.

    Infant to Young Adults
At COLG we value people of all ages. On Sunday mornings, we have ministry designed for infants and youngsters. Youth Alive, ages 12-18, meet on Wednesday nights at 7pm. And our Young adult ministry, 18-30ish meets once a month.

    What about giving?
As a guest, you will not be expected to give during our service. If COLG is your church home, we simply ask that you love and honor God with your resources and partner with us in our Mission and Vision for Galveston.

Church of the Living God is non-denominational
COLG is not affiliated with a specific denomination. We believe that the Bible is the inspired and infallible word of God and it is the standard instruction for living life.

What We Believe

  • There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And the Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God, our sole authority.

  • Mankind was created in the image of God, but man sinned and consequently experienced physical and spiritual death. As a result, all people are born in depravity, with a sinful nature, and apart from Jesus Christ.

  • The shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ is sufficient for the salvation of man. The only means of being cleansed from sin and saved from eternal damnation is to be born again, through repentance and faith in the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • The full humanity and full deity of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, and lived a sinless life. We believe in His miracles, His atoning death for our sins, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His future return to Earth in power and glory to rapture His Church and to judge the world.

  • The only means of being cleansed from sin and saved from eternal damnation is to be born again, through repentance and faith in the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Jesus Christ is the head of this church and we are His body to love and serve. The supernatural of God is for today. This includes miracles, healing of the sick, and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
